Cross Browsing, is still necessary develop WordPress theme for IE6/7 ?

As a web developer and wordpress theme designer, most of my working time is concetrated on make all the elements of a theme or website run well both on firefox, chrome, opera and Interne Explorer.
Internet Explorer, from ancient times, make user experience very stressing : slow loading, bad rendering, limitated use of css, png doesn’t run without plug-in or script…in conclusion a very stressing user experience and things doesn’t seem to improve with new versions from 8 to 9.

The Browsers stats relative to the W3schools Website Browser Stats (source: W3C schools ) ,show, in april of this year ,the percentage of users for IE is 24,3%.One year before, in the same month the percentage was more higher: 33,4%; almost 10% of market share was lost.

Now let’s see Internet Explorer Version stats: at this month IE6 and IE7 reach together approximately 7,4% ( 2,5% IE6, 4.9% IE7 ). So a very poor percentage of people continue to use this older versions; so, my question : is is still necessary develop WordPress theme for IE6/7 ? Have a good designer push user to update to a new modern browser ? Or do You think that web designer must continue develop website and themes also for this older versions of IE ?

Is still necessary develop wordpress themes for IE6 ?

I’ve read your latest posts about crossbrowsing. Don’t do it. IE 6/7 is dying. Drop it!
I will go even further. Could you imagine creating a WP theme just for the web-kit part of Chrome and Safari? With Facebook Single Sign-On login, Like and Send and Tweet buttons, and with good touch support?
This could enable us to make Social Web Apps, easy and fast. If you are interested, I have a lot of ideas and reasons to provide.
BTW. I’ve liked you Themes a lot. I’m going to try your beautiful Renova for my appslifestyle.wordpress.com blog. But it will take time, ‘cos I’ve moved it to HostGator etc. etc.

I’m agree with you Morten, as a web designer and specially as wordpress theme designer i’m pushing my clients and user who download my themes to update their experience to modern browsers. On hybridside theme i’ve inserted a ban for those people who use old version of IE to update to modern browsers. This is my little contribute to make a better world without stress (and that’s why the label of the answer ).On the other hand, as a designer and as an architecture student i must admit that, we must work to provide a good user experience to everybody, also to that 7.4% who use older version of IE.This reason give me the suggestion to write and ask a poll about that: have an opinion and comments from people.

I’m interested about your opionion and ideas about how to improve the web and the social web apps.

In conclusion i want to say thank to you for the compliments about Renova, it’s a good result for me reading your happiness (for now :D ) about it, it push me to make always better.

In the next days i will make a post about the updates of Renova, will be a lot of news.

Thank you Morten hope to continue to stay in touch.

    Hi Lorezno,

First, it’s not W3C School. It’s just W3 School. Second the survey is only about their website and don’t represent any accurate results. Last and more important, please take a look at this link http://w3fools.com .

    Cheers,
    Daniel

You’re right man, i’ve update my article. What do you think about the question ?

        Hi Lorenzo,

The best way to answer the question is analysing the Google Analytics and see how much traffic you get from your visitors that still using IE6 and IE7. In my case, I found out that IE6 is irrelevant for me and IE7 will die soon.

One thing that I’ll always do is to show a warning message for the visitor when he/she access my website from an old browser.

        Cheers,
        Daniel.
